Published April 23rd 2019 by Thomas & Mercer (hardcover, kindle), & by Brilliance Audio (audiobook) Wolfhunter River (Stillhouse Lake #3) by Rachel Caine, Emily Sutton-Smith (Narrator), Dan John Miller (Narrator), Lauren Ezzo (Narrator), Will Ropp (Narrator) Without lapsing into Evangelical hagiography, he depicts Bonhoeffer as a sincere believer in the Lord Jesus who had a high regard for scripture truth, for the Christian life, and for Christlikeness. Metaxas handles the nuances and complexities of the early-twentieth century theological landscape with erudition and finesse. A towering figure like Bonhoeffer is deserving of a worthy chronicler, and Metaxas does not disappoint. Metaxas has produced a work that is illuminating, inspiring and informative. Having just finished it (technically, having just finished listening to my Kindle read it to me over a few very long drives), I would say that this status is justly deserved. There is much I’d change about this review with almost a decade of reflection between then and now.Įric Metaxas’ Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy has already achieved the status of a modern biography classic. Anyway, here’s my earlier review, unedited, but please follow the link for a more updated opinion. It probably won’t explain it to anybody’s real liking, but I think the general idea comes through. Haynes’ The Battle for Bonhoeffer: Debating Discipleship in the Age of Trump that, I think, will explain some of my own shifting views on Metaxas’ book and Metaxas himself. I’ve decided to leave this review up but link to my recent (2020) review of Stephen R. Since that time, for a number of reasons, I have changed much of my opinion of Metaxas’ book. Note: I wrote this review nine years ago. It’s not all serious though, as it ends on a humorous note, and there are plenty of silly moments throughout the story, humanizing the characters and showing how they adjust to their lives. The story’s multiple art styles further the plot of a child with a disability struggling to become an adult and understand the choices their parent made for them. “Wolves don’t lie” moves rapidly between full-page detailed drawings of wolves and night scenes to emotional scenes between the main character and his mother to chibi characters and a few quick lines demonstrating humor and emotion. “My God” blends detailed landscapes with humorous depictions of humans and spirits in a sometimes funny sometimes regretful story of change and growth. “The Mermaid Refuge” delves into what it means to be sentient and human, with simple, child-like lines and faces that match the innocence of the story and the theme of children becoming adults and grappling with serious questions. “The Dragon Turret” is a historical drama with intense, detailed pen and ink work, showing the futility of war and the pointlessness of prejudice. Seven stories of magic, romance, and humor, set in different time periods, show the broad range of Ryoko Kui’s artistic and storytelling abilities. Whether you are breathlessly waiting for the next installment of Delicious in Dungeon or new to Ryoko Kui’s manga, this collection of short stories is perfect to introduce to new readers or satisfy fans. This fluid love is the Holy Spirit that Jesus will “breathe” upon his followers (John 20:22) - the Holy Spirit who lingers among us still. As he speaks, then, Jesus tells of a fluid, swirling kind of love that permeates and connects God, himself, and his followers all to each other. Jesus is grieving that goodbye, while also anticipating a joyful return to his Abba in heaven. These friends are saying goodbye to each other while also scrambling for ways to stay together. Unsurprisingly, a sense of longing permeates the whole address. There’s a lot that Jesus wants to accomplish without fully tipping his hand. He’s preparing them for who he is becoming, as well as how he’ll continue to be among them - and, by extension, among us. Or, at least, it’s time for him to say goodbye from the perspective of who they’ve known him to be thus far. Now it’s time for Jesus’ final words to the remaining 11. MOST OF OUR gospel readings in May move through sections in John’s gospel commonly referred to as the “farewell discourse.” In this long goodbye, Jesus and his disciples have finished eating their last supper together. The setting of the novel also plays an important role in the story. Additionally, Jesse’s past and his own family relationships are explored as the two grow closer. Ava’s relationship with her father is particularly intense, as she struggles to understand his motivations and his life choices. The novel is full of complex characters and relationships, from Ava’s developing relationship with Jesse to her strained relationship with her father. Despite his seemingly unapproachable demeanor, Ava finds herself drawn to him, and the two embark on a passionate and tumultuous affair. Set in a small village in England, this romantic drama follows the story of Ava O’Shea, a young woman who finds herself drawn to Jesse Ward, a handsome and mysterious man.
